New to Exercise

   
  Only 20% of people in the UK get enough exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle and satisfactory fitness level. The main reason given for not taking part in enough exercise is lack of time. However, exercise can be fitted into the busiest of lives. For example, half an hour of cardiovascular exercise (the stuff that makes your heart rate go up!) in the gym is enough to raise the heart rate sufficiently to improve circulation.

Most fitness professionals will recommend the average healthy individual does 30 minutes of moderate cardio vascular exercise 3-5 times per week.

If you are new to exercise or it’s been a while since you stepped in the gym, then you should have a rest day after each workout day to allow your body to recover and repair.

I am a new member and would like to use the gym but have never used a gym before and not sure what to do...

No problem, everyone has to start somewhere! You firstly need to book yourself a Gym Induction at reception, this involves one of our friendly gym instructors showing you around the gym and getting you familiar with the equipment you will use.

They will show you which machines to use and how to use them safely and correctly. So after the session is over, you will have enough knowledge to embark on your first workout!

I have had my induction but still need some new ideas to help me. I need a plan, something I can stick to...

Great that obviously means you’re interested in improving your fitness levels and want to know how to do this in a more structured way.

We offer Gym Workout Programme’s for FREE. You can book one of these again at the front desk. This will consist of a 45-60 minute session with a member of the fitness team, where they will find out what you would like to achieve fitness-wise and your long and short term goals. You will need to wear workout clothes for this. After the session you will have a workout card and a workout that you can follow from start to finish!

I have had my induction but there are 1 or 2 machines I am not quite sure how to use correctly...

We understand it can be hard to remember everything you get told in your induction, especially if you are new to exercise and haven’t used gyms before. So you can do two things, either ask one of the Instructors if they are around the gym, or book a short 30 minute ‘refresher’ session with one of the team.

TIPS FOR NEW EXERCISERS
  • Start off relatively easy, so you can build up your body strength over the coming weeks.
  • Vary your workouts to keep it interesting.
  • Get some comfortable trainers.
  • Drink water to replenish what you lose in sweat.
  • ENJOY IT!
